Here is the story of Gran Torino Snare: For many years, I’ve been searching for the ideal formula to recreate the famous vintage Jasper shells, used by iconic brands like Gretsch, Rogers, and Slingerland since the 1950s.
The information available online indicated that Jasper shells were made by alternating horizontal and vertical wood plies of different thicknesses, following specific patterns: HVHVVH for toms and snares, and HHHVVH for bass drums. At first, I thought the bass drum configuration was a transcription error — HVHVVH seemed more logical — but thanks to artificial intelligence, I was able to track down an original period document that confirmed the HHHVVH structure, which is quite unusual and difficult to bend.
Fascinated by this configuration, I decided to experiment with it on my snares, which I named GT Gran Torino, using a combination of Khaya mahogany and birch. The result is impressive: a defined sound with rich, well-rounded lows. The choice of an 8-lug setup gives these snares a unique character and a truly special sensitivity.
The GT models are 14x5 and 14x6.5. Mahogany-Birch shells, 7.5 mm thick, with vintage snare beds and 60° bearing edges. 8 lugs, equipped with 3.0 mm R-Hoops. New throw-off and 16-strand Dope Ghost snare wires.
